15 Apr Preparing your Vehicle for Summer Heat

The summer heat can be hard on your car, especially if you aren’t prepared for it. Here are some things you can do now to make sure that your vehicle will keep running when the weather really gets hot.

Get a Tune-Up

If it’s been a while since your car has had a tune-up, you might want to get that done before the the summer season starts. You don’t want your car to break down and leave you stranded in 95-degree heat, so make sure your car is in proper working order while the weather is still reasonably cool.

Service Your Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is a must during the summer, so you will want to have yours serviced when you bring your car in for a tune-up. This is especially important if you have an older vehicle since the coolant will probably need to be recharged. Even if there isn’t technically anything wrong with your air conditioning, having a trusted technician take a look at it will prevent any additional problems from showing up later.

Check Your Tires

Asphalt gets incredibly hot in the summer, and that can increase the likelihood that an underinflated tire will blow out. Getting new tires in the summer will definitely take care of that problem, but if you don’t want to spend that kind of money, you can just make sure that your tires stay properly inflated for now.

Get a Survival Kit

Finally, you should have a survival kit in your car at all times in case you do get stranded. This should include bottled water, non-perishable food, jumper cables, road flares, a flashlight, some coolant and a basic first aid kit. This is something that should be in your car at all times regardless of the season, but it will be especially important when the weather gets dangerously hot.
